Compulsory Course (C)

Students are introduced to the Greek Demotic Music, Cretan theatre and the Heptanesian School. Later on they are introduced to the Greek language question: the early phases and the work of the main representatives of Purism and Demoticism, and, at last, the translation movement from foreign languages into Greek during the 19th century.

The notion of culture and its changes in a rapidly changing world and changed identity of the people in the era of globalization, the influence of this new era on specialized translation, the relation of power between major and minor languages, the popularization of specialized texts and their translation.

This course focuses on scientific texts with interdisciplinary background, such as texts with technical, medical and other scientific features as well as modern scientific texts from the fields of medicine, biotechnology etc.

In this course Greek technical texts referring to websites of different products adapted to the German market are discussed and translated; furthermore, popularized texts, oral texts and their adaptation/translation and/or popularization in written form, brochures containing medical or other subjects are studied.

The focus of this course are the principles of technical texts in Greek and German based on specialized texts such as instructions for use, manuals, patient information leaflets and risk communication in specialized texts.

This course focuses on the translation of travel guides and brochures. As two of the many text types pertaining to the textual category of general texts that, travel guides and brochures can be rather lucrative for the professional translator, too, as they are, amongst others, a frequent translation task.

This introductory course in Greek to German translation deals with texts from daily news as source texts. On the basis of this text type as one of the many text types pertaining to the text category of general texts, the students learn to deal with the linguistic, cultural and textual issues and problems that emerge from the translation of this particular text type and with this particular translational directionality.
