This course aims at helping students understand the close relationship between language and society, deepening into issues such as context, linguistic diversity (dialects and registers), language as a social group identity, attitudes of speakers, language contact, language death and revival, language policies and their role in the future of a language, etc.

In this course we examine issues regarding the inclusion of translation in the group of text sciences and translation’s association to linguistics (especially text linguistics and sociolinguistics) and philosophy of language. We examine issues on internationally used terminology and types of equivalence and synonyms.
